A Sumter Veteran who served during World War II led the Pledge of Allegiance before Sumter County Council’s Tuesday meeting.
Frederick L. Huth Jr. served our Nation in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 and is one of the few remaining WW II Veterans living in Sumter County.
Sumter County Council Chairman James T. McCain Jr. noted that Huth is also a Pastor and would lead Council in prayer.
After Huth’s prayer, McCain thanked him for his service and told everyone that Huth is 97 years old, to which everyone applauded.
“It is only by God’s grace that I am here,” Huth said. “I did nothing exceptional.”
He recalled that from his high school class, 14 young men went into military service.
“Two of us came out,” he said. “That’s God’s grace. I’m thankful for it.”
“And we’re thankful for you,” McCain replied.
Huth lives in District 5, which is represented by Councilwoman Vivian Fleming-McGhaney.
